A ROAD TRIP ON THE MOTHER ROAD TO CELEBRATE BEING A CAR FANATIC AND MY 66TH BIRTHDAY

Turning 66 as COVID continues. An idea pops into the head and won’t let go.

A road trip on Route 66 while I’m 66. Might as well keep the 66 theme going and do it in a’66.

But what ’66? Keep with the theme of the Route 66 TV show, and it’s a ’66 Corvette. Except I don’t own one. How much to buy one? Ooh, that’s pretty dear on the ole’ budget.

Can’t be a foreign car, after all, this is Americana and it has to be good ole’ American history. How about a ’66 Mustang? They’re plentiful, prices are (somewhat) reasonable, parts are everywhere. And they’re fun.

There’s a glitch in that plan – forced to relocate my shop and there goes a couple of months out of the schedule. It’s risky to find, buy and fix whatever is needed to drive a 56 year old car cross-country in a few months. And back again.

My 67th birthday is fast approaching and the goal is to do Route 66 while I’m still 66. Time for Plan B: the classic American sports car, 21st-century style.

A plan is born. Chicago to Santa Monica, 2,448 miles. One bodacious Corvette in my favorite color.

Tune in as the plan grows and takes shape, then tune in as the journey unfolds.
